Overview – Little Dragons (4 - 6 years), Children’s & Youths Programme (7 - 15 years)

Little Dragons

The Little Dragons programme is designed specifically for younger children to learn the basics of modern Shukokai Karate in a fun way. The Programme is a detailed curriculum that focuses on improving 4 to 6 year old children's basic motor and listening skills. These skills will help them enter society with a more confident and enthusiastic outlook. They will become better students at school, better listeners at home and more ambitious towards the future. We believe the time between the ages of 4 and 6 are the most important years of a child's development. Our programme will enhance positive development in a fun and motivating way.

The Little Dragons Programme will also prepare your child for our Children's Karate Programme. In the Little Dragons classes, your child will be exposed to positive social interaction, they will learn how to work with others and follow directions from their instructors. Our Little Dragons Instructors are good role models, who are trained specifically to work with children.

The Little Dragons curriculum consists of developing 8 Major Skills that are necessary for participation in any sport or activity. The curriculum also contains 8 Little Dragon Personal Development Skills that are used to reinforce family values. Upon completion of our Little Dragon Programme your child will become focused and motivated to achieve any goal they set in life!

The Little Dragon curriculum specifies one drill per week in order to fully develop each skill. The drills are designed as games so that your Little Dragon has fun and learns the Dragon Skills without even realising it. The programme has been designed to give the Little Dragons a greater challenge with each level, this will stimulate the Little Dragons into having to have greater focus and install perseverance in order to overcome these challenges.

The 8 Little Dragon skill requirements are composed of physical and mental benefits. The following are the skills and the benefits from participating in the Little Dragon class:

Skill #1: FOCUS -- This will help your child's aim, listening skills and reaction skills. They will excel faster in any physical activity. Your child will also become a better listener and a more focused student in school.

Skill #2: TEAMWORK -- Teamwork is necessary for any young child to develop. The more confident your child is willing to work with others, the more he or she will accomplish. Your child will develop character, which will help him or her make new friends and become a better leader in life.

Skill #3: CONTROL -- Having control means making good decisions. Whether your child is handling a pet or handling a problem, he or she will learn to make the right decisions. Control builds confidence.

Skill #4: BALANCE -- This skill is crucial to develop at an early age. Your child is beginning to participate in many physical activities that are challenging, like riding a two-wheel bicycle. Your child will develop good balance and a better posture.

Skill #5: MEMORY -- Developing a good memory is exercise for your child's brain. The sooner your child exercises, the smarter he or she will become. Our drills are constantly helping your child think and make smart decisions.

Skill #6: DISCIPLINE -- Our instructors use the Little Dragons drills to help create the vision that discipline is fun and rewarding. Your child will take pride in doing the right thing. Your child will also follow directions better.

Skill #7: FITNESS -- It is important for children to understand the importance of being healthy and physically fit. If your child does not burn off excess energy exercising, how will he or she burn off all of that energy?

Skill #8: COORDINATION -- Your child will learn left from right. They will become better physical participants in sports and activities. The better coordination your child has, the fewer injuries your child will sustain.

In our Little Dragon classes, we make learning fun and educational. Our goal is to help your children be the best they can be at everything they put their minds to.

In our Little Dragons classes, we make learning fun and educational. Children learn more by play, and in your child's eyes, the drills they are taught are more like games. The games will help your child retain more and more and be more willing to learn and do things he or she normally wouldn't enjoy doing.

Upon completion of the programme your child will become more focused and motivated to achieve any goal they are set in life!

Children’s & Youths Programme

For beginners and advanced students - Children and Youths. Sport Karate East offers one of the finest healthy bodies and minds programmes.

Seven Reasons Why Children & Youths Should Take Up Karate -

Grace Under Pressure

Most beginners are as tight as bow strings. As the weeks pass they learn to face imaginary opponents calmly. They will learn to keep their heartbeat at normal levels, their sweaty palms will be gone while they fix their attention on their partner. This new grace benefits students in ways that extend beyond the Karate studio. Parents often notice changes in their children as they learn to approach adults and other children with security and self confidence.

Role Models
Parents find that Karate promotes achievement orientation. Sport Karate East provides an environment of positive role models. Students work to improve their skills to the best of their ability. In our studio a variety of people display extraordinary determination. Children exposed to this type of determination have a greater chance of incorporating this attitude into their own personality.

The Need Too Belong
An advantage of Karate over team sports is that every child can participate. Unlike some other sports, where a child may not make the cut or ends up sitting on the bench. Karate lets everyone perform to his or her highest level. Children and Youths don't get involved in negative activities because they like it or because it makes them feel good, but because they want to fit in. Children and Youths associated with Karate don't have that type of identity problem. Students of Karate are often leaders in their peer groups.

Concentration and Academic Performance
Karate lessons may help children study. Concentration is definitely improved by Karate training. The traditional kata’s [patterns], are a set of prescribed movements against an imaginary opponent, it is a lesson in self control and concentration. At Sport Karate East, academic performance is positively reinforced and rewarded through our programme.

Goal Orientation

The Karate belt ranking system bestows a different belt colour for each step on the ladder. Each student sees the result of his or her efforts. It is neither watered down nor inflated by the team effort. A by product of the belt test is learning poise in front of judges and an audience.

Physical Benefits

In Karate the entire body must perform intricate coordinated movements. Children will find Karate to be one of the best ways to develop balance and fluid movement. Aerobic capacity and flexibility are also increased by a marital arts workout. Flexibility makes a young athlete less prone to injury and more flexible in later life.

Diffusing Bullies
A bully usually has low self-esteem and a need to feel powerful, thus they seek out others weaker than themselves. Karate, contrary to popular thinking, does not prepare people for a showdown rather it short circuits the bully-baiting signals. In most cases the bully is defeated, not by combat, but by the martial artist's calm and confident demeanour. Some people are concerned that Karate promotes violence, according to recent psychology studies however, just the opposite occurs. We teach our students to have better control of their reactionary impulses and to only resort to physical interaction when all other options have been negated, utilising their training only as a form of self-defense.
